The Streets of Havana

The Story of Cuba

Politics aside, If the people of Cuba today are a “story”, then it is a tragedy. Having endured Spanish colonialism, Capitalistic exploitation, dictators like Batista and Castro, and finally the suffocating US embargo, the tragedy is the Cuban people who must bear all the harsh consequences of their history.

The Cuban people are not starving, and they are provided health Care, housing, and an education at the highest level of any country in the Caribbean. And yet they are engaged in an everyday struggle to work hard and provide for their families while living under the constraints of the eternal embargo that puts them at a distinct disadvantage ie: at a lower standard of living when compared to the peoples of other similar nations.

And of course, they are not free, but live under the veil of a repressive, autocratic regime.

Amazingly, the Cuban people seem to have a will to live and enjoy life the best they can. Their friendliness and optimism runs contrary to their predicament, and it is touching to experience.
